Covering 880 square miles, the Lake District National Park is the largest, most spectacular and most visited of Britain's National Parks.

Established by Parliament in 1951, its purposes are:

To conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the National Park.
To promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the National Park by the public.
