Ormerod Back At Accrington

Accrington have pulled off a major coup by signing the Lancashire League’s leading amateur bowler, David Ormerod from Bacup.

Ormerod has decided to join Accrington the club where he began playing cricket as a junior back in the 1980s after deciding to leave Bacup due to the club's decision not to re-appoint him as captain after just one season in charge. The 36 year-old has turned down offers from countless other clubs to return to his roots and 'put something back' into the Lancashire League's sleeping giant.

Since making his debut in 1990, Ormerod has taken 877 wickets for Bacup at 17.1, second only behind Fred Hartley as Bacup's leading wicket taker of all time. Now it seems he will take his 1,000th league wicket for Accrington after helping his adopted club Bacup to win three successive titles and picking up the Lancashire League's Senior Bowling Award on six occasions.

Ormerod has also finished as the league's overall leading wicket taker twice. The right arm medium pacer modelled his style on Accrington stalwart Ian Birtwistle, who took 822 wickets for the club between 1964 and 1994.

Ormerod's father Alick, who is now the Lancashire League's Deputy Chairman, is a former 2nd XI captain at Accrington where he played from 1965-1980.

The club is also in negotiations with an Indian spin bowler with a view to a professional engagement next season. More good news locally, this time from Rishton who have achieved ‘Clubmark’ accreditation this week.
