Narrow boat on the Leeds and Liverpool

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is the longest in the UK, and cuts through some of Hyndburn's most beautiful scenery as well as giving an insight into an industrial past.  Once used for trans-Pennine transportation, the Leeds and Liverpool now provides a unique leisure resource to Hyndburn and indeed throughout its length.

Boating, walking, fishing, cycling, canoeing, sailing or a leisurely walk can provide hours of peaceful relaxation by the waterside.  The canal offers plenty of other interests too, from photography or painting, to bird watching or spotting the traces of a historical past.

The canal passes through many of Hyndburn's towns, including Rishton, Church, Oswaldtwistle and Clayton-le-Moors.  Many of the borough's attractions can be found loacted within easy walking distance of the canal, making it ideal for those on canal holidays.

For those of you interested in the history of the Leeds and Liverpool, you can download a leaflet here which gives a fascinating insight into some of the historical tales behind this great old canal.  If you don't have a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer you'll need to get hold of one using the link to the right.  Acrobat Reader is free of charge.
