Accrington Pals

1st July 1916 is a day which scarred Accrington forever. For on that one fateful day a battalion of men drawn from Accrington and neighbouring towns - known as the Accrington Pals - saw action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Out of 720 Accrington Pals who took part in the attack, 584 were killed, wounded or missing

Almost everyone in the area was touched by the losses. Everyone knew a relative, friend or neighbour who had been killed or wounded.
