Judaism was founded in the Middle East around 3500 years ago by Abraham and Moses.  Its central beliefs surround one God, and the belief that Jews are the people specially chosen by God.  God created the universe, and he continues to affect everything that everyone does.

There are approximately 12 million Jews worldwide today, most of whom live in Israel and the United States.  Jews believe that they have a personal and individual relationship with God, an agreement with Him that in exchange for all the good deeds He has done for them, they will abide by His laws and bring holiness to every part of their lives.

Judaism is based very much on a community level and many of the activities of the religion are carried out as communities.  As a consequence, Jews feel close bonds with each other, despite the fact that they may live in different parts of the world.

Each week, Jews observe the holy Sabbath from sunset on Friday until sunset on Saturday.  Many Jews look forward to the Sabbath (Shabbat) as they see it as God's gift to the chosen people. It is a time when they can take a rest from everyday life to feel a little special.

It is very much a family time, and often a special meal is eaten.
