Quiz Answers: 1. A. Citizens Advice Bureaux have been providing free advice in local communities since September 1939. The CAB in Accrington was established in 1949 and closed in 1946. A new Citizens Advice Bureau was established as Accrington & District CAB in 1964, later becoming Hyndburn Citizens Advice Bureau. 2. B. Citizens Advice Bureaux deal with almost 5.3 million problems every year. Last year in Hyndburn we dealt with around 10,000 enquiries, handling over £2.5 million of personal debts and bringing in over £800,000 in welfare benefits and other entitlements to people in the borough. 3. C. Citizens Advice Bureaux deal with more than one million new debt issues every year. The average debt brought to our advisers is £10,000 4. D. Across England and Wales, CAB can give advice in 78 languages. In Hyndburn we offer advice in English, Punjabi, Urdu, Bengali and BSL.. 5. C. 41% of the population has used a CAB. 6. A. The Citizens Advice service is both an employer and skills training agency with a workforce of over 27,000 people, of whom nearly 21,000 are volunteers. All advisers undergo rigorous training and can write letters, make phone calls, prioritise debts, negotiate with creditors, represent people at courts and tribunals and refer people to specialist CAB case workers and others. But you don’t have to be an adviser to be a volunteer, there are lots of other jobs such as being a member of a trustee board. 7. C. Our advice is available in nearly 3,400 locations – in bureaux, in community venues such as GP surgeries, county courts, hospitals etc, and also in people’s homes, on the phone, by email and at www.adviceguide.org.uk 8. B. All Bureaux are independent registered charities and are funded by money from local authorities, Lottery funds, charitable trusts, companies, Legal Services Commission, individuals and others. 9. A. Our trained advisers can give advice on virtually anything from benefit claims to unfair dismissal, debt and repossessions. Our information systems are unrivalled for depth, breadth and quality. 10. D. Volunteers are worth around £70 million a year across England and Wales, and in Hyndburn between £340,000 and £400,000 a year. |
