Stanley Close in on Crown

ACCRINGTON Stanley could have the title in the bag by next week if results go their way.

The Reds need just eight points with six games left to clinch the Conference title and, if they win on Saturday against Grays and nearest rivals Hereford lose their next two games against Woking tomorrow and Morecambe on Tuesday, then the Reds are guaranteed a Football League return.

Captain Peter Cavanagh wants the title sewn up as soon as possible - although he would prefer to do it on the field than sat at home.

"It will be weird if we win it on Tuesday just watching the results come through," said the skipper. "I would prefer to play a game and win it and then have all the celebrations - but we will take it anyway."

Not that manager John Coleman is letting his side get carried away as they have what he calls "the hardest game of the season" against play-off challengers Grays on Saturday.

"This will be a very tough game as they are a good side," said the Reds boss. "I think we will need to play better than we have in our last six or seven home games. |They have just reached the FA Trophy final so the pressure is off them a bit and they are scoring for fun at the moment."

But keeper Rob Elliot is determined the Reds will finish the season in style.

"We want to sprint over the line and not drag ourselves over it so we want a good finish to the season with plenty of wins - starting on Saturday. Grays are a good side but I think we are five or six wins better than other teams in the league."

Robbie Williams returns from suspension while Leam Richardson is still banned.
