Coleman: My strongest squad everACCRINGTON Stanley have had a flurry of late signings ahead of their opening Conference clash against Canvey Island on Saturday. The Reds have added centre half Michael Welch, who has played more than 100 games for Macclesfield, to their squad, ex-Chester teenage defender Danny Ventre and hope to complete the signings of ex-Blackpool wing back Leam Richardson and striker Andy Magnan today. And Coleman, who had already signed Andy Tretton, Matt O'Neill and keeper Stuart Jones during the summer, may swoop for a striker on loan before their clash with the Gulls. "I think I have the strongest and fittest squad I have ever had and I have never been so optimistic in a pre-season," said the Reds chief. "I think 72 points will get us to the play-offs and that is the aim this season. "I was disappointed we didn't get that last season but if we iron out the silly mistakes and cut out our wastefulness in front of goal, then I am confident of a top five place. I think we are one of the top five teams in the Conference - I thought so last season and my opinion hasn't changed." Canvey are one of just three part time clubs in non-league's top flight and Coleman expects three points on saturday. "It is important to get a home draw in your first game as opening games are always difficult. I just hope the fans come out and support us and we give them plenty to cheer about. It is a two way thing. We have played some lovely football in the last two pre-season games so we have got to carry that on." The Gulls are managed by Jeff King and have a prolific non league striker in Lee Boylan and they have also signed Alan Tait from Crawley. And, among their number, is former Red Stuart Bimson who was at loan at Stanley at the start of last season. The left back said: "I couldn't believe it when I saw the fixture and heard it was Accrington. It is a great first game for me as I had a great time at Accrington and am only sorry it didn't work out wages wise. They are a good set of lads and I was shocked they didn't make the play-offs last season." Hereford are the bookies' favourites to lift the Conference crown although Stevenage are also expected to be strong. They lost out in the play-off final to Carlisle last season. "I think any of the top ten teams who took part in such a thrilling finish last season could win the league," said Coleman. "It will be close and I expect us to be up there."
