Reds slaughter Lambs

ACCRINGTON STANLEY 5 TAMWORTH 0

STANLEY progressed to the Northern section quarter-final of the Conference Cup with a revenge victory over Tamworth.

The Reds hit the understrength Lambs for five and now face Northwich or Hereford in the semi-finals.

It was sweet justice for Stanley who have lost twice in the leaue to Tamworth already this season. The result was never in doubt as the Reds front line of Lee McEvilly, Paul Mullin and Rory Prendergast were on top from the whistle.

Jonathan Smith almost opened the scoring from a corner on 23 minutes but his effort hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced onto the line and out.

But two minutes later McEvilly caught out the keeper with a 25-yard drive which sailed past the hapless Ryan Price. On 29 minutes it was two when Paul Mullin bundled a Prendergast cross over the line.

Rory scores against Tamworth

Number three came just after the break when McEvilly headed home from six yards out and Rory Prendergast scored a superb solo effort on 51 minutes. They finished the scoring on 57 minutes through another solo goal from the winger.

"It would be good to win this competition so it is good to get through," said manager John Coleman. "We were up for this game more than them but it is up to them if they want to play a weakened side. All the forwards did well and we could and should have had more goals.

"We played a lot of decent stuff and that's four wins on the bounce. Now we have to take that into Saturday's league game at Exeter."
