Flynn off as Stanley exit Trophy

Tuesday January 19 2005
Hereford 4 Stanley 0
FA Trophy
Third Round replay

Red card

Accrington Stanley crashed out of the FA Trophy to Conference rivals Hereford in their third round replay at Edgar Street.

The Reds were always chasing the game when dangerman Adam Stansfield fired home his 17th goal of the season on 17 minutes after springing the Reds'off-side trap.

Then disaster struck for Stanley when experienced defender Mike Flynn saw red for a tackle on Stansfield on the edge of the area on 26 minutes.

The Bulls hitman was judged the last man although it had the watching Stanley contingent scratching their heads as it didn't seem a clear goalscoring opportunity.

It got worse for the Reds when Danny Carey-Bertram made it two on 35 minutes after a corner ended up with pin-ball in the area.

Unmarked Tom Smith headed home at the far post just after the break and Carey Bertram wrapped it up on 67 minutes.

"It was never a sending off," fumed boss John Coleman. "He wasn't the last man and the referee admitted there was no intent and it was a geniune attempt to get the ball. That was the turning point. But we showed character to keep going until the end and could have got a goal back."

This was when Lee McEvilly stung Craig Mawson's hands in the last five minutes - but the game was already well won by then.
