Leaders make Reds pay for misses

Accrington Stanley 1
Exeter 2

A missed first half penalty proved to be very costly as league leaders Exeter came from behind to take all three points at the Interlink Stadium.

Stanley were rewarded for an enterprising opening when on 35 minutes they were handed the spot kick when Roberts was upended.

Striker Paul Mullin stepped up to the spot but Exeter keeper Jones - who was a thorn in the Stanley side all afternoon - parried the ball and Andy Mangan smashed the rebound over the bar.

Stanley created a number of other useful chances with Brown and Mullin to the fore.

Mullin loooed to have made amends for his penalty miss after 58 minutes when he shot home from close range from a Roberts pull back.

Stanley had a couple of chances to make the game safe but when they failed to take them the visitors came back strongly. Craig Watkins made the scores level, taking advantage of a hesitant Stanley defence.

Three minutes later the game was turned completely on its head. Billy Jones crossed and Chris Todd headed home the winner to leave Stanley cursing their missed chances.

"They were two mistakes by Rocky and the lad is devastated," said  boss John Coleman. "But they are the top of the league. Are they better than us? I don't think so. That is some of the best football we have played this season."
