Penalty Pain for Reds

Rotherham United 3
Accrington Stanley 3
(after extra time)
Stanley lose 3-2 on pens

Accrington Stanley suffered spot kick misery their perfromance didn’t deserve in the LDV Vans Trophy first round at Rotherham last night.

The Reds we just second away from capping a magnificent fightback with victory in extra time when the hosts when Marc Newsham scored for the League side deep into extra time injury time to force penalties.

The United keeper Gary Montgomery came into his own during the shoot-out saving two spot kicks to give Rotherham the tie.

The time started with a flurry of goals. The home side took the lead after 10 minutes when Martin Butler shot past keeper Andy Dibble but Stanley hit back eight minutes later through the impressive Andy Mangan. Will Hoskins restored Rotherham’s advantage six minutes later.

But with 15 minutes of normal time remaining Robbie Williams struck for John Coleman’s men and took the game into extra time.

The match looked to be heading Stanley’s way when they took the lead for the first time when David Brown turned home and Ian Craney cross
— only for United to break their hearts.
