The Haworth is home to the largest public collection of Tiffany glass in Europe.  The gallery itself is housed in a wonderful, Tudor style Edwardian mansion, standing in nine acres of parkland.  It's a wonderful place to visit, both for the array of art and glass on display, and for the magnificent building and surroundings.

The Haworth also houses a unique art collection and an exciting programme of exhibitions and events.  Having recently undergone extensive renovations, the gallery is now fully accessible, has a new shop, a children's fun room with art activities, interactive displays and a scrumptious tea room.

Originally called 'Hollins Hill', the Haworth was built in 1909 by Yorkshire architect Walter Brierley.  It was built for William Haworth and his sister, Anne, who were the children of Thomas Haworth.  Thomas was the single most important manufacturer of cotton in Accrington from the 1850s onwards. 

When William and Anne died, the house was bequeathed to the Corporation of Accrington, and opened its doors to the public as an art gallery on September 21, 1921.

The gallery has a collection of mainly 19th and early 20th century oil paintings and water colours.  These include works by famous British artists such as Frederic, Lord Leighton, John Frederick Herring and William Shayer.  A materpiece French painting, 'Storm off the French Coast', by Claude Joseph Vernet is on permanent display.

Local, regional and national artists and crafts people are featured in a programme of regularly changing exhibitions.  There are also regular workshops and craft activities, as well as musical evening and an annual open event.

The Haworth has free admission and free car parking.  It is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday.
